Improvement of IFAS

The heads of the founding states of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) at the Summit of the Heads of the States-founders of IFAS, which took place on August 24, 2018 in Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan, expressed their readiness to further improve the organizational structure and legal framework of IFAS in order to create an effective and a sustainable institutional arrangement.

To implement this initiative, based on the decision of the IFAS Board of January 30, 2018, a Regional Working Group was created under the IFAS Executive Committee to improve the organizational structure and legal framework of IFAS from among representatives of the relevant ministries and agencies of the IFAS founding states. The main objective of this Regional Working Group is to prepare proposals for improving the organizational structure and existing regional agreements in the field of water resources management.

The result of this activity of the Working Group was 3 documents: 1) Discussion document – Improving the organizational structure and legal framework of IFAS: analysis and proposals, 2) Conceptual elements of improving the organizational and legal framework of IFAS [Elements of the Reconsidered Agreement on IFAS], 3) Stages of improvement of organizational structure and legal framework of IFAS (5 stages).

Improving the organizational structure and legal framework of IFAS remains one of the priority issues during the chairmanship of the Republic of Tajikistan in IFAS. In this direction, the Executive Committee of IFAS is actively working with all partners in order to successfully implement this task.
