Water in Central Asia plays an important role not only in socio-economic development but also in ensuring peace, stability and development. The countries of the region are united by two great rivers - the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya, which from time immemorial have been providing life-giving water to the population, agricultural lands and other sectors of the economy of the countries of the region.

Central Asia is located in the center of the Eurasian continent - at the junction of Europe and Asia and covers an area of about 4 million km2. The region covers the territory of five countries: Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. It is home to over 70 million people.

Since ancient times, the people of Central Asia have demonstrated their understanding and the art of efficient use of water, turning it not only into an instrument of life but also using it as a natural defense for their cities and towns.

Despite the ongoing crisis of the Aral Sea, which has caused enormous damage to the socio-economic and environmental situation in the region, today Central Asia is facing new challenges that further worsen the current situation.

IFAS and its subdivision perform a wide range of tasks, including financing and lending of joint interstate ecological and scientific and practical programs and projects, financing of joint fundamental and applied research, scientific and technical developments, creation and maintenance of the interstate ecological monitoring system, data bank and others systems on the state of the natural environment of the Aral Sea basin

In 2023, IFAS celebrated its 30th anniversary. In honor of this important anniversary, on 5-7 June 2023, the International Conference “Central Asia: Towards Sustainable Future through Strong Regional Institution” was held in Dushanbe, Republic of Tajikistan.
