The Aral Sea Basin

The area of the Aral Sea basin covers about 700,000 square kilometers and includes Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, most part of southern Kazakhstan, and the northern part of Afghanistan. It is a kingdom of high mountains, dry steppes, semi-deserts and deserts.

The Aral Sea basin includes the basins of the two main rivers of Central Asia which are the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya.

The Amu Darya is 2540 km long from the south and the Syr Darya is 2200 km long and reaches the Aral Sea from the north.
