Development of cooperation between the countries of Central Asia in the field of water resources in the context of climate change

On 14 November 2022, within the framework of the COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, the Arab Republic of Egypt, a session was held on: “Development of cooperation between the countries of Central Asia in the field of water resources in the context of climate change”.

The session was organized by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Executive Committee of IFAS and aimed at demonstrating at the global level the experience and regional water cooperation of the countries of Central Asia through the existing institutional mechanism (IFAS).

During the session, issues of strengthening regional cooperation, transforming existing obstacles into opportunities for achieving water, energy, food and ecological security in Central Asia in the context of climate change, strengthening a science-based approach in solving water issues in the face of climate change, as well as participants exchanged views on how much water can become a unifying factor for the countries of the region against new challenges – such as climate change, rising water consumption, etc.In addition, the session provided an opportunity to discuss how the countries of the region and development partners can cooperate in achieving the SDGs in Central Asia and prepare for the UN 2023 Water Conference, which will be held on March 23-24, 2023 in New York under the chairmanship of Tajikistan and the Netherlands.

At the session, a welcoming speech was delivered by Mr. Jamshed Shoimzoda – First Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan and Mr. Sulton Rahimzoda – Chairman of the Executive Committee of IFAS, Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Water and Climate Coalition Leaders. Representative of Kazakhstan to EC IFAS, Mr. Serik Bekmaganbetov, Regional Representative of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Mr. Mohsin Hafiz, Executive Director of CAREC, Mr. Zafar Makhmudov, spoke at the session as panelists. The session was moderated by Mr. Sanoi Boyzoda – the Representative of the Republic of Tajikistan in EC IFAS.
